Is God Speaking?

I’ve been informed many times that the Bible doesn’t speak about abortion. Apparently because the word abortion isn’t found in Scripture, some have concluded that abortion is okay with God.

In my theological training I recall being encouraged to be bold where Scripture is clear and cautious when Scripture is not clear. This is a reliable guideline, but it can be very misleading to become a literalist, and neglect the intent of the author in revealing the heart of our Father.

God’s Word does actually reveal His heart on this issue and allows us to reach a clear conclusion that He opposes abortion. We need not go any further than Proverbs 6:16-17 to learn that God detests the shedding of innocent blood; whose blood can be more innocent than that of the preborn child?

Some may argue that the fetus in the womb is not a “person” and therefore not fully human. But science itself clearly demonstrates that the fetus is fully human. After all, it’s not a fish or a monkey or a batch of cells. It is a human being.

As believers in the Creator of all mankind we must reflect His design in a world that chooses to create their own design. When the world says that the preborn is “only” a fetus—which, by the way, means young one in Latin—or a “clump of cells,” we say that the preborn child is a person and fully human, declared not by us but by the Creator himself.

I believe that God is speaking specifically to those who believe in Him. We just need to make sure that we’re listening, and ask ourselves: What are You saying? Are we willing to respond in obedience to His prompting? If we, God’s people, do not respond, who will? If we do respond, I can only begin to imagine the abundant life that would multiply as a result.

Are we willing to be God’s voice for the most oppressed, the most persecuted, the most innocent human beings on Earth?

  1. Pray that God will open your ears so that you can hear His clear and distinct voice on this issue.
  2. Be willing to respond in obedience and humility to what He says, no matter what others might think.
  3. Be willing to use the gifts God has given you to address this vital issue. God has gifted you for a reason and you’re part of the solution!

Before we were conceived in our mother’s womb, God had already determined a destiny for each of us, and had ordained all of our days that we would live on this Earth (Psalm 139:16). Ask Him to reveal to you the next step toward fulfilling your own God-ordained destiny, and what you can do to help the preborn child fulfill hers!
